Mittens by trial and error...

I have always wanted to knit mittens...ever since I first started knitting. The idea is one I've found daunting. However, a few weeks ago my mother-in-law was here visiting and she knit several lovely mittens during her stay. My desire was renewed..fueled by my son's frequent requests for mittens to go with his slippers. Yesterday I decided to make a mitten. The first attempt did not go so well...the second one slightly better...but the third one was just right.

As you can see the first one (left in the picture) came out more like an oven mitt. I scratched that pattern and found another one. I followed that pattern to the letter but found that the cuff was too loose and just didn't have quite the look and feel I wanted (center in the picture). So I modified that pattern a bit which resulted in the one you see on the right and below. I'm very pleased with the outcome overall.
My son wanted to model them...
